“Winter began with the holidays, a time to be cheerful and jolly. We’ve gathered with family and loved ones, sometimes for extended periods of time. According to the Mayo Clinic, in the colder months, human behavior has the tendency to change for the worse. During Winter, diminished sunlight can trigger what is called winter-onset Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). SAD disrupts our body’s internal clock, which can result in depressive feelings. Lowered serotonin levels (a neurotransmitter influencing mood) might contribute to this seasonal condition. This, coupled with the added activities necessary to navigate Winter, with the discomfort of lower temperatures, may affect how we express ourselves at home, work or play. So, especially during the Winter months, we must be extra mindful of our interactions.”
