Writing brings me joy. But I wasn’t, as you know, as focused as I needed to be—picking it up, putting it down. And so, I started to really refocus actually, during the grieving process after my grandparents passed away in 2015. I really struggled with their deaths, especially my grandmother’s. And so, I remember kind of getting down, a little depressed. And my mother reminded me of what brings me joy. And so, she brought up my writing. She told me, “You love to write. It’s a God-given talent! But if you don’t nurture it, you may lose it.” And I feel like I was taking it for granted. I had won writing awards and all those things when I was younger, and I would have little various things published here and there. But I really started to refocus—that this is my dream. I decided, “This is one of my dreams. And I’m going to sit down and I’m going to do it.” It helped me to refocus my energy to just kind of get through the grief. And so I dedicated the book to my grandmother and my two aunts who passed away. That was really the process.

Once I reached out to Tiffany Goode here in Atlanta. She had a publishing company at the time. She was a Turner executive, and we’d gone to Hampton together. She’s my big sister. My Soror, that is. We are both Deltas. And I told her about Skin Like Mine and about just different things I’d been writing. And Tiffany really helped me with the vision for a children’s book and taking this adult novel and writing it so that kids could understand it. Because I talk about the colorism that I experienced. It did happen in my childhood, or it started in my childhood—having a lighter skin, a Black mother, and me being with dark skin. So once that happened, that I met with Tiffany, I just started writing, and it just flowed.

At some point in time, we all may have been guilty of giving up our power. We’ve allowed the opinions of others to validate how we feel about ourselves. In hindsight, it was not a good thing. We are so influenced by the perceived norms of society that we often cave to the trend. Sometimes the trend goes against what resides within us. We see things differently, we interpret things differently, we understand things differently.

This reminds me of Noah, in the Bible. Talk about owning your own power! Can you imagine how he must have felt, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year? He was a lone star. It would have been understandable to us if he succumbed to the naysaying voices around him, to the ridicule. He could have easily listened to everyone around him telling him that what he was doing was crazy. Yet he had enough faith in his Higher Power and enough resolve within himself—to press forward, stay focused, and maintain his power.

I once was asked about advice on who trust should be given too. My response, absolutely NO ONE! Trust is not given, it’s earned. When trust is broken, the process starts all over again. Assuming the recipient is worthy of another opportunity. There is so much that lies within trust. Trust creates the space to let your guard down, to relax, to feel confident, safe, vulnerable. We all can probably reflect on that first time our trust was broken. What a violated feeling! It’s a feeling that is not easily overcome. The walls go up and it is almost impossible to allow someone else to earn that trust. This is where the dilemma lies because sometimes that special person comes along. That special person who we can trust with our life. But the walls are so thick from the previous betrayal, we don’t let them in, and often lose what is said to be the best thing that could ever happen to us. I don’t have an easy answer because I struggle with it myself. The wounds of broken trust are deep. It takes a patient, understanding soul to endure the journey of chiseling through the thick walls of distrust. Some have done so successfully, and it has been a beautiful thing. Has your trust been broken? Allow yourself the opportunity to heal from the brokenness. Pray for wisdom and discernment as you move forward in life. Take your time and trust, that God will show you who deserves to earn the most precious gift of trust.

I recently listened to an audiobook narrated by Smokey Robinson where he reflected on his journey through life and the role that music played on that journey. Wow! What a fascinating journey! He spoke of his childhood and all the musical influences he was surrounded by in his neighborhood.  The other children in the neighborhood that he grew up with, children that grew up and made the music we all love from that era. It was interesting, listening to him talk about their childhood and the childhood games they played. Childhood games that were peppered with music. Music they were surrounded by or music they generated in the moment. He spoke about how some of his most well-known songs came to be and what life experiences inspired the titles. A legendary era of music, birthed out of neighborhood influences, experiences, friends, and the natural gift of music and writing.

Most of us have a favorite song or songs and can remember where we were or what we were doing when we first heard those songs. Some legendary musical icons have been labeled as one who makes “baby making music.” Now some of you can probably name your child(ren) after one of those songs with the smooth, soulful sound, the beauty of the acapella, the instrumentation, the lyrics! The songs of that era told a story, took you on a journey, or shared with you what it was like to be in love. The songs of that era had live musicians, the violins, the bass guitar, the saxophone, the harp! The melodic sounds just gave the music another layer of depth and beauty that can’t be captured in digital technology. And let us not forget those stereo speakers that gave that bass line, a thumping groove on some of the more “funkier” sounds. Somehow, you just don’t get the same feeling listening to those songs on an electronic device but I’m just speaking for myself. The craft, the soul of the music! What an era!

The unsung heroes of that era are the songwriters, the individuals who, may not have sung the songs themselves. The creative writing that they brought to the table, skyrocketed through the artist who ultimately recorded the beautiful lyrics.

The music of that era spoke to the social consciousness of the times. The interesting thing is that some of those songs still resonate and are so relevant today Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” has remained relevant throughout the decades as it seems, every decade we are scratching our heads and asking the question “What’s Going On?” He told us “war is not the answer” yet hear we are, years later, wars later…  “when will we ever learn (Where Have all the Flowers Gone-Pete Seeger)?”
