Recover your I Am. Release the Mask!

By Paula G

The beauty of recovery is that it is always an option. We have to remember that when we get discouraged about our failures or setbacks.

Our lives are filled with so many ups and downs, twists, and turns, and unexpected seasons.  The loss of a home, the loss of a loved one, the loss of a marriage, the loss of finances, we all incur some level of loss. The question is, how do we handle that loss? How do we get past that moment, that season, that discouragement, that depression? We have to view the situation from the perspective of this being an opportunity to have a fresh start. Many of us who have gone through divorce cannot see life beyond the moment. I recall someone saying that to me when I divorced almost 20 years ago. I couldn’t see it and certainly didn’t want to hear it. However, I eventually began to realize that I was at the threshold of opportunity. It was indeed a fresh start, and it certainly was an incredibly difficult journey, but it was necessary as it is for each and every one of you. A fresh start is necessary when life deals you a difficult blow. As I reflect on my own journey there were some things, I had to do to recover my I Am.

  • Process! Yes! Process what was happening in my life. After 23 years of marriage and suddenly being single, ummm…. that’s a process. If you are currently going through a relationship change, please allow yourself the space to process your emotions and feelings.

  • Help! Yes, reach out for help! We often avoid reaching out and asking for help but some things we were not meant to endure alone. Discern who you can share with because your business is not meant to be shared with everyone. The right person or persons can be instrumental in helping you through the difficulty.

  • Assess where you are in life. What are your assets? What are you good at? What can you keep doing? What do you need to do differently? What, if any, training do you need?

  • Reclaim your “I am.” When we are dealing with any kind of loss, sometimes a part of us is lost as well. Being able to restart provides the opportunity to examine yourself to see what you are really made of. The authentic you and what that person has to offer instead of the person who was present to mask the remnants of difficult times.

There is a lot of work that goes into building our lives, homes, careers, relationships and so on. When we find ourselves in the position of having to start over, let’s not be discouraged. Let’s look at it as an opportunity to discover new ideas, new ways of doing things, new relationships so that we can remove the mask and embrace a fresh start.

Remove the Negative, Replace with the Positive

By Paula G

This past year has had setbacks. Setbacks distracted me and derailed me completely. So, I sit at the threshold of this new year having not achieved the goals I set out to achieve. Can you relate? However, this year, I have given myself some grace and changed my thoughts on the dilemma. Changed the conversation in between my ears. I’m no longer focused on the rear-view mirror. I see it now as an opportunity for a new beginning.

I have a saying that I hope will encourage you as it is encouraging me in this new season. As long as you wake up every day, as long as you are living and breathing, you have an opportunity to do something with that particular day. You have the opportunity to do something that puts you one step closer to your goals. Even if it is a small step. Even if you only spent 30 minutes that day doing something toward your goal, THAT is a victory for that day. Celebrate it! If you have some paralyzing events that occur in this season. I offer a few suggestions to help you navigate through.

  • Stop! Now everyone may not agree with this one but sometimes when events occur in our lives, we need to stop and allow ourselves to process the feelings and emotions that accompany that circumstance.

  • Allow yourself the opportunity to seek professional help. Yes, again, some may feel some kind of way about this one as well, but mental healing is a necessity.

  • Don’t’ suppress the emotions. Find a way to process the event. A way that will bring peace and closure or at least the beginning of closure.

  • Think of something that was near and dear to that person and honor them by implementing an aspect of it into your goals. For example, a dear friend used to say that all life events prepare you for the next season. I have taken the lessons learned from each season and applied them to my continued journey.

Life happens. You are not alone. Remove the negative, replace with the positive. Navigate through the seasons and embrace the journey ahead.

Change…not the kind you get the jingles in your pocket. It is the kind that occurs as you keep living. Change, as they say, is inevitable. Some of us adapt to it easily. Some of us fight it tooth and nail. However, at the end of the day, it happens. Change!

There is an old Gospel song that says, “As I look back over my life, and I think things over, I can truly say, that I’ve been blessed, I’ve got a testimony.” Each and every one of you can say the same thing. Each and every one of you can testify to how the changes in your life affected you.

At some point, I am speaking to myself as well, we must choose to change. We may have been dealt a bad hand. We may have been unloved, hurt, rejected.

All of that may have left us harboring ill feelings and resentments. We may have been labeled as one of those people who are “angry at the world.” However, it does not have to be that way. At some point, we have the power to make the decision to change our lives. In some cases, it is a difficult decision indeed.

Someone once told me that “if you don’t like the way your life is going, you have the ability to change it.” That stuck with me for a long time. I cannot recall when, how, or where I made the decision to change but, I made the decision to change. You can make the decision to change if you do not like the trajectory of your life. However, the change must start with a different conversation in between your ears. Change!

You must look at what areas of your life you are dissatisfied with. Why are you angry? Why are you fearful? Who are you angry towards? What are you afraid of? Why do you feel you are not capable of accomplishing your goals? Why do you think so negatively? Why are you so pessimistic? You get the picture? So those questions are just examples. You can certainly utilize them, but you can also come up with your own customized questions and engage in that ear-to-ear conversation.

Words have power. Whether spoken aloud or spoken softly in between our ears, words have power!

You may ask yourself; how can I use my voice to shift the atmosphere? Sometimes expressing your voice calls for dialogue, it calls for research. Researching that which you desire to speak into existence, into the atmosphere! Knowledge is power! Before we can speak into a particular issue in our lives, we must be knowledgeable about that issue!

Whether we like it or not, we have been placed in a circumstance that has positioned us to come face to face with…ourselves. No place to run, no place to hide, just staring at the person in the mirror. For some, those moments of stillness have been revealing.

Revealing echoes of our inner being that we have avoided facing. Avoided because we do not want to deal with the buried feelings, emotions, or mindset that evoke discomfort. Some of us are also dealing with echoes of our being that have been screaming for change. Those echoes are joyfully embracing this moment. I don’t know about you but at one point, several years ago, I reached that “sick and tired of being sick and tired” moment. I was tired of not facing the sounds of those uncomfortable echoes. I began banging on the door of transformation. I was pleading for an entry pass! I was looking down the road that was shifting from where I was, looking for a patent on reinvention, perhaps a moment of pivoting to getting on the right track so that I could transcend into something better. I read! I researched! I inquired! I prayed! I dealt with the uncomfortable echoes because where I was going, there was no room for negative voices. I was banging on the door of transformation, looking for a place called Better, on the other side. Once I found Better that’s when I began to flourish! Find your Better!
